Plasma HDTV Info

A Plasma HDTV (high definition television) is perhaps the highest art of home theater technology. All the brightness of a standard CRT in a flat panel mounted flush against the wall. Prices are coming down on the 42" models, but be careful of several issues.
First, be sure the plasma monitor has the resolution to support HDTV. It needs to be able to display either 720p (progressive display of 720 lines) or 1080i (interlaced display of 1080 lines). Some plasma displays on the market (the cheaper ones) do not have sufficient resolution to support this. They are not HDTV capable. Be careful!
Second, take care to assess the black levels of the monitor. The greatest difficulty with plasma displays is in displaying black. From my own reviews, the best in terms of black representation are the Pioneer models (particularly the Pioneer Elite) and the Panasonic. On other models, black areas of the picture can appear more gray than black.
